Top-Seeded Moya Loses to Qualifier at China Open

Top-seeded Carlos Moya was eliminated from the China Open on Wednesday, losing to qualifier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-3, 6-3, at Beijing.

Moya, ranked No. 4 in the world, committed error after error and served eight double faults. As Moya faltered, Tsonga stepped up the pressure, winning four break points.

Ai Sugiyama, Chanda Rubin and Jelena Jankovic lost in the first round of the Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia.

Sugiyama lost to Aiko Nakamura, 6-4, 7-6 (1), Rubin fell to Tathiana Garbin, 6-1, 6-4, and Jankovic was beaten by Angelique Widjaja, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Ricardo Mello defeated second-seeded Mardy Fish, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in the Millennium International championships at Delray Beach, Fla.

College Football

Marshall Coach Bob Pruett will not be reprimanded for calling the Ohio State team “a bunch of Mandingos,” a comment some thought could be offensive to African Americans.

Pruett said he used the term to mean “superior ability, superior strength, boldness and courage.”

Ohio State defeated Marshall, 24-21, on Saturday.

Bowling Green freshman Aaron Richardson died after becoming ill during the first 10 minutes of practice. An autopsy is planned for today.

Kovensky Pierre, a freshman offensive lineman for Bethune-Cookman, was killed in a car accident near Jacksonville, Fla. Teammate Willie Jackson, a passenger, was in serious condition with undisclosed injuries.

Suspended Virginia Tech tailback Mike Imoh pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge stemming from a night of drinking with underage girls and avoided jail. He was suspended earlier by Coach Frank Beamer for three games.

Pro Basketball

Kurt Rambis, 46, an assistant coach with the Lakers the last three seasons, will fill a newly created position in the front office as vice president of business and basketball integration.

Forward Christian Laettner, 35, who was waived last week by Golden State, signed a one-year, $1.1-million contract with Miami.

Former Long Beach State standout Lucious Harris was waived by New Jersey. Harris, 33, who played seven seasons for the Nets, averaged 6.9 points last season.

Hockey

The Mighty Ducks signed forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, their two first-round picks in the 2003 draft, to three-year contracts.

Getzlaf, who will earn about $1.2 million a season, had 28 goals and 75 points in 49 games with Calgary, a junior team, last season. Perry, who will earn $1 million a season, had 40 goals and 73 points in 66 games with London.

A judge has waived the arraignment for Atlanta forward Dany Heatley, who has been charged with vehicular homicide and five other counts in the 2003 wreck that killed teammate Dan Snyder.

Forward Martin Havlat signed a one-year deal with Ottawa.... Edmonton captain Jason Smith signed a four-year deal with the team.

Soccer

AS Roma’s Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev in Rome was suspended at halftime after referee Anders Frisk was hit with an object thrown from the stands and left the field with blood dripping from his forehead. Dynamo led the Group B match, 1-0.

Bayer Leverkusen, losing finalists to Real Madrid in 2002, hammered the Spaniards, 3-0, in London, in the opening rotation of the Champions League.

Miscellany

Sandy Barbour, 44, was named athletic director at California. She succeeds Steve Gladstone, who wanted to return to his previous job as the Golden Bear crew coach.

Mark Marquess, 57, who has been Stanford’s baseball coach for 28 seasons, signed a five-year contract extension through the 2009 season.

Bantamweights Jesus Valdez (16-5, 13 knockouts) of Merida, Mexico, and Roger Gonzalez (23-1, 17) of Chino will headline a six-bout Golden Boy Promotions card tonight at the Irvine Marriott.

Pat O’Connell and Kelly Slater were among the 16 heat winners at the opening day of the Boost Mobile Pro surf contest in San Clemente.
