The Riverside City Council Tuesday approved “in concept” a proposal to bring a baseball team to the city.

The move has no financial backing, but endorses efforts by a newly formed league to put a team in Riverside.

Jerry Schoenfeld, founder of the West Coast Baseball League, approached city officials this year about bringing an independent team, which would have no affiliation with a major league team, to the city. The team would begin play in 2005 or 2006.
