Valdivia Can Repeat in San Juan Capistrano

Share

The last jockey to win the $250,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap two years in a row was Eddie Delahoussaye. The retired Hall of Famer won with Marlin for trainer Wayne Lukas in 1997 and the next year with Amerique for trainer Ron McAnally.

Jose Valdivia Jr. has a chance to match the accomplishment when he rides San Luis Rey Stakes winner Stanley Park in the roughly 1 3/4 -mile turf race, which is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $133,531.

Valdivia won with Meteor Storm for trainer Wally Dollase in 2004.

Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, Stanley Park, a 5-year-old Swain horse, was winless in four starts since his victory in the 2003 Bay Meadows Derby before his one-length upset over the aforementioned Meteor Storm and Star Over The Bay in the San Luis Rey.

All The Boys, who finished second behind Passinetti in the 2003 Capistrano, is back for another shot today and he enters on a roll for owner Bob Bone and trainer John Martin.

An 8-year-old gelding, All The Boys is two for two since being claimed for $50,000 on Feb. 3. Michael Baze will ride.

Race of the day: Pleasant Chimes, who has won two of three for owner Edward Evans and trainer Mark Hennig, will make her first start outside Florida in today’s $150,000 Comely at Aqueduct. Pablo Fragoso will ride the 3-year-old in the Grade II at one mile. Eight others entered the Comely, including Toll Taker, Secrets Galore, Acey Deucey, Last Toots, Seeking The Ante, Quite A Ruckus, Bright Mahogany and Merrill Gold.

One for the road: Battle Won won his only previous start on the Keeneland turf course and should get a good trip stalking what figures to be a quick pace in today’s $100,000 Shakertown, a Grade III at 5 1/2 furlongs. Rafael Bejarano will ride the 5-year-old gelding for owner Jay Manoogian and trainer Chuck Simon.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Rocket Ready, the Currency Trader entry and Nifty Souvenir in the eighth, Stanley Park, All The Boys and Exterior in the ninth, Siphon Honey, Borasca and Awesome Lady in the 10th and Cabo’s Dawn in the 11th.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/211. Money: Previous day/meet total: $16.80/$1,155.60. Total money bet: $1,396.
