Highway set to reopen

Share

Caltrans expects to open a portion of landslide-ravaged Angeles Crest Highway above La Canada Flintridge this week, but it will take longer to clear all the debris blocking the San Gabriel Mountains route.

Winter downpours triggered landslides on two sections of the highway -- at Red Box Road and at Islip Saddle north of Mt. Wilson, says Howard Okamoto of the U.S. Forest Service.

Caltrans expects one lane to reopen perhaps as early as tomorrow near the Red Box fire station. That portion has been closed since March. Landslides closed the Islip Saddle section in January. It’s still under 4 feet of snow and repair crews have been unable to reach it.
