‘Echo Won’t Travel as Far

Thor’s Echo will shorten up to seven furlongs when he takes on eight other California breds in the $100,000 Real Good Deal today at Del Mar.

The 3-year-old Swiss Yodeler gelding hasn’t run less than 1 1/16 miles since Jan. 21 at Santa Anita. He broke his maiden by four lengths that day, completing six furlongs in 1:09 2/5. The beaten favorite in the Iowa Derby on July 1 at Prairie Meadows, Thor’s Echo will break from post seven today.

The field also includes improving Mudweiser, a 3-year-old gelding who beat maidens by two lengths June 10 at Hollywood Park, then stretched out to 1 1/16 miles nearly a month later and won by 2 1/2 lengths.

Completing the field are Ninety Fine, Mexico Excess, Scottsbluff, Proud Tower Too, Funny Flyer, Thirsty Guy’s and Wind Water, who was second to Lost In The Fog in a three-horse race at Golden Gate Fields on May 14.

Race of the day: Theater R.N., who has won four of five, will make her first start since last Oct. 31 and first for trainer Bill Mott in the $65,000 Waya today at Saratoga. Jerry Bailey will ride the 5-year-old Theatrical mare for owner Mark Dedomenico in the 1 1/2 -mile race on turf. Other contenders include Latice, an Irish-bred who won four of seven racing in France and Hong Kong, Wintermix and Freeroll.

One for the road: Sunshineofyourlove will make her first start for high-percentage trainer Dale Bennett and first against Illinois-bred maidens in today’s sixth at Arlington Park. Eduardo Perez will ride the 3-year-old War Chant filly in the $27,000 contest at about one mile. She does not have much to beat.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Kinship, Lady’s Memo and Currituck in the sixth, Thor’s Echo and Mudweiser in the seventh and Special Favor, No One Like Me and Tootenkamen in the eighth.
