Maybe the Mighty Ducks have come to terms with the fact they aren’t the high-scoring team they expected they would be coming out of training camp.

The Ducks’ propensity for tight, low-scoring games made Wednesday night’s 6-1 blowout of the Phoenix Coyotes worth savoring at the Arrowhead Pond as they extended their winning streak to three games.

In defeating the Coyotes for the fourth time in five tries this season, there were sights unseen by the Ducks this season, including Teemu Selanne and Chris Kunitz scoring eight seconds apart in the second period to set a club record for the shortest span of two goals.

Also, rookie forward Dustin Penner scored the first two goals of his career, including one on an end-to-end rush to cap a three-goal onslaught in the second.

“We got our chances and we capitalized tonight,” said Joffrey Lupul, who scored in his second consecutive game. “That’s what we’ve got to do to win hockey games.”

The signs were pointed in the Ducks’ direction from the outset. They erased three penalties in the first eight minutes and four in all in the first period.

Lupul turned the tide when he beat Coyote goalie David LeNeveu on the sharpest of angles with a quick wrist shot from the goal line on the left side of the net with 39 seconds left in the first.

“In reality, we didn’t have a very good first period,” Duck Coach Randy Carlyle said. “We killed four straight penalties. The penalty killers gave us a chance to get our game going.”

The Ducks took control in the second and made it an easy night for Ilya Bryzgalov. Selanne scored in his fifth consecutive game, and Kunitz followed with a goal on a breakaway off a pass from Ruslan Salei after Todd Marchant won a faceoff.

After Phoenix’s Tyson Nash shot wide on a two-on-one rush, Penner got the puck in the defensive zone and carried it up the ice before beating LeNeveu with a wrist shot from the right circle.

“I was just taking my time getting up there, seeing if I could get some guys coming with me to make it a three-on-one,” said Penner, called up last week. “Once I got close enough, I thought I might as well shoot.”

He got another power-play goal in the third.

Former Duck Mike Leclerc got the Coyotes’ only goal.
