The Boston Red Sox will have a whole new infield next season, and they’re only halfway there.

Boston traded Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for third-base prospect Andy Marte, giving up on Renteria only one year after signing him.

Renteria, 30, led the majors with 30 errors last season after signing a four-year, $40-million deal. He was the only regular infielder left from last season: first baseman Kevin Millar, second baseman Tony Graffanino and third baseman Bill Mueller are free agents.

The Red Sox got Mike Lowell from Florida to play third and Mark Loretta from Milwaukee to play second, but they are still looking for a shortstop and first baseman.

Renteria also struggled early at the plate, finishing with a .276 average, eight home runs and 70 runs batted in.

Only one season after signing him, the New York Yankees traded second baseman-turned-outfielder Tony Womack, 36, to the Cincinnati Reds for a pair of 24-year-old prospects.

The Yankees also agreed to a two-year, $2.4-million deal with left-handed relief specialist Mike Myers, 36, who went 3-1 with a 3.13 earned-run average in 65 games for Boston last season.

No longer wanted in Texas, pitcher Kenny Rogers, 41, agreed to a two-year, $16-million deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Detroit also reached an two-year, $11-million deal with free-agent Todd Jones, returning the veteran closer to the team he pitched for from 1997-2001.

Rogers was 14-8 with a 3.46 ERA last season. Jones, 37, was 1-5 with a 2.10 ERA and 40 saves in Florida.

As expected, major league baseball players unanimously approved a new steroid agreement that toughens penalties and could result in a lifetime ban for a third-time offenders.... Baltimore Oriole shortstop Miguel Tejada said that he’s unhappy with the team’s direction and wants to be traded. Tejada signed a six-year, $72-million contract before the 2004 season.... First baseman Mark Sweeney, 36, and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a two-year, $1.8-million contract. He batted 294 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs for San Diego last season.
