Four Unbeatens Pack Hollywood Starlet Field

Share

Four unbeatens will be racing today in the $250,000-guaranteed Hollywood Starlet, the second and final Grade I of Hollywood Park’s fall meet.

Actually, five of the 2-year-old fillies in the lineup have never been beaten, but a win by Balance, the probable favorite in the 1 1/16 -mile race, was taken away by the stewards at Oak Tree on a questionable call Nov. 2.

The four with officially perfect records are Fall In Love, Meetmeinthewoods, Sabatini and Private World.

Like Balance, Private World is a daughter of Thunder Gulch and she hasn’t lost in three sprints for Thoroughbred Capital Partners and trainer Bob Hess Jr.

She also knows how to fight. Her last two wins have been by three-quarters of a length and by a nose in the Moccasin on Nov. 20.

Fall In Love, a California-bred daughter of Apollo, is two for two and will be trying a distance race for the first time.

Meetmeinthewoods was arguably the most impressive maiden winner of the meet for trainer Doug O’Neill. She won by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:08.75.

Sabatini rallied from last to win by five lengths in her initial start Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

The Starlet, which was won a year ago by Splendid Blended, is completed by Diplomat Lady, Political Web, Loosends, who has won two of three in Maryland, and Delaware, True Xena, Incumbent and Karlee’s Kitten.

Race of the day: Clever Electrician, who likes the inner track at Aqueduct, heads a field of 11 sprinters scheduled to go six furlongs in the $100,000 Gravesend. Jose Santos will ride the 6-year-old in the Grade III in a field that includes Spooky Mulder, Super Fuse and Smokume.

One for the road: Kona Run goes from route to sprint and could make the last run count in today’s first at Golden Gate Fields. Francisco Duran will ride the 4-year-old gelding in the $10,000 claimer at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Tonnerre in the sixth; Swiss Lad, Watch Over Me and Patriot’s Pass in the seventh; Balance, Meetmeinthewoods and Sabatini in the eighth; and Valid Again, Luther and Dragon King in the ninth.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 4/79. Money: (previous day/meet total): $17.60/$423.80. Total money bet: $422.
