Don’t Get Mad Will Try to Win First One for Ellis

Declan’s Moon, the Eclipse Award winner as the country’s top 2-year-old in 2004, isn’t the only unbeaten 3-year-old stabled in trainer Ron Ellis’ barn.

Don’t Get Mad, a son of Stephen Got Even who won his first two starts at Churchill Downs in November, will make his first start for Ellis in today’s $150,000 San Vicente at Santa Anita.

A Grade II at seven furlongs, the San Vicente was to have marked the 2005 debut for Roman Ruler, but he is expected to be scratched by trainer Bob Baffert because of a foot problem.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Don’t Get Mad broke his maiden by six lengths over a sloppy track Nov. 2 in Kentucky, then won an allowance race at the San Vicente distance by 1 1/4 lengths a little more than three weeks later. Tyler Baze will ride Don’t Get Mad.

Trainer Wayne Lukas and owners Bob and Beverly Lewis will try for their second stakes win with a 3-year-old in a matter of eight days with Consolidator. A son of Storm Cat, Consolidator hasn’t run since finishing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Oct. 30 at Lone Star Park. Best known for winning the Breeders’ Futurity, a Grade I, last fall at Keeneland, he will be ridden by Victor Espinoza.

Fusaichi Rock Star and Kirkendahl, who is undefeated in two sprint starts, round out the field.

Race of the day: Musical Chimes, a Grade I winner on the turf, is scheduled to make her first start on dirt in today’s $250,000 Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita. Edgar Prado will ride the 5-year-old In Excess mare for owner Maktoum al Maktoum and trainer Neil Drysdale in the Grade I at 1 1/16 miles. Miss Loren, Hollywood Story, Personal Legend and defending champion Star Parade are other top contenders.

One for the road: Love That Man can continue his roll after being re-claimed by trainer John Martin in today’s eighth at Bay Meadows, a $32,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Dennis Carr will ride the 6-year-old Manlove gelding, who has won four in a row. He has won two of five on the Bay Meadows grass.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Miradero in the fifth, Consolidator, Don’t Get Mad and Kirkendahl in the sixth and Cahill Mango, Affidavit and Raise Expectations in the seventh.
