Stanford Wins Fifth in a Row

Chris Hernandez scored 23 points and made six free throws in the final 21 seconds, lifting Stanford to a 69-65 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night at Palo Alto.

Hernandez’s free throws with 21 seconds left broke a tie and gave the Cardinal, 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference, its fifth consecutive victory.

Dan Grunfeld added 15 points as Stanford beat Oregon State (11-8, 3-5) for the 11th consecutive time.

Nick DeWitz scored 19 points to lead the Beavers, who lost their seventh consecutive conference road game. Oregon State has lost 12 in a row at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford was down to eight scholarship players and a walk-on when freshman center Peter Prowitt was unable to play after suffering an ankle injury during practice on Monday. The Cardinal roster has dwindled from 14 because of injury, ineligibility and two others leaving to concentrate on football.

California 65, Oregon 62 -- Marquise Kately scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half at Berkeley and the Golden Bears won their fifth in a row at Haas Pavilion.

Rod Benson added 15 points and six rebounds for California (10-8, 3-5 Pac-10).

Malik Hairston scored 15 points for the Ducks (11-6, 3-5), who lost for the fifth time in seven games.

The Bay Area trip has been ugly for the Ducks, who haven’t won in Berkeley since Feb. 12, 2000 -- and haven’t won at Stanford since Jan. 13, 1986.

The Bears played their third game in a row without top scorer Richard Midgley, who has an injured right shoulder.

Arizona State 68, Washington State 62 -- Serge Angounou scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds as the Sun Devils (15-5, 4-4) held off the Cougars (8-9, 3-5) at Tempe, Ariz.

Jeff Varem had 24 points for Washington State, which has lost three in a row.

Arizona State’s Ike Diogu had 15 points and 13 rebounds before he fouled out with 33 seconds left.
