Sosa’s Milestone Homer Not Enough

Gary Matthews hit a three-run homer in the 11th inning, and the Texas Rangers overcame a milestone shot by Sammy Sosa to beat the Orioles, 11-8, Wednesday night at Baltimore.

Matthews connected in the 11th against Jorge Julio (3-3) after Richard Hidalgo walked and Mark DeRosa singled. Sosa hit his 587th homer to move into sole possession of fifth place on the career list. Sosa’s 13th homer, his third in four games, broke a tie with Frank Robinson.

Minnesota 7, New York 3 -- Johan Santana (10-5) shut down the Yankees for seven innings to help the Twins stop a 10-game regular-season losing streak at Yankee Stadium. He only once came close to giving up a run -- center fielder Torii Hunter threw out Derek Jeter at the plate in the third inning.

Oakland 5, Cleveland 4 -- Marco Scutaro lined a single to left to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Athletics won for the eighth time in nine games.

Kansas City 6, Chicago 5 -- Mike Sweeney homered twice and drove in five runs, and Emil Brown hit a run-scoring single in the 13th inning as the Royals overcame a five-run deficit at Kansas City, Mo.

Boston 4, Tampa Bay 1 -- Tim Wakefield (9-9) scattered six hits over 7 1/3 innings at St. Petersburg, Fla., and Curt Schilling earned the save by getting the final out. Wakefield yielded an unearned run in the fourth to win for the first time since July 5.

Seattle 9, Detroit 3 -- Jamie Moyer pitched eight solid innings, and Richie Sexson homered twice to lead the host Mariners.
