Dotson Receives 35-Year Sentence

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Former Baylor basketball player Carlton Dotson was led off to prison for 35 years Wednesday to shouts from the stepfather of his murdered best friend and teammate, who held up a framed picture of his son and yelled: “Remember him! Remember his face!”

“You, Carlton Dotson, are a killer, a sinner of the worst degree, and may you never forget what you did,” Brian Brabazon said during the sentencing in Waco, Texas, at times glaring and pointing at Dotson as his voice rose to a shout.

Dotson showed no emotion. Valorie Brabazon, the mother of victim Patrick Dennehy, sat in the front row sobbing as her teenage daughter tried to comfort her. She said afterward that the family would attend all parole board hearings and urge that Dotson “doesn’t walk the streets again.”

Dotson, 23, pleaded guilty last week to killing the 21-year-old Dennehy, whose body was found in 2003 in a field where the two friends had gone to shoot targets.

The case against Dotson shocked the Baptist school and led to a scandal in the basketball program.

Andy Roddick jumped to the No. 2 seeding for Wimbledon, the first time only one American man was seeded in the top 16 at the event, and he could face No. 1 Roger Federer in a rematch of last year’s final.

Federer’s seeding matched his ATP Tour standing, but Roddick was pushed two spots higher than his ranking, ahead of 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

Hewitt was seeded No. 3, with Nadal -- who has little experience on grass -- at No. 4.

The seedings matched the rankings for the top eight women, led by No. 1 Lindsay Davenport. She was followed by defending champion Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo and 2002-03 champion Serena Williams.

Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic was upset by fellow Croatian Ivo Karlovic, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (1), in the second round at Nottingham, England.

Lars Burgsmuller, who hadn’t won a match in his last eight tournaments, ousted Robredo, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Jan Hernych defeated Coria, 6-3, 6-4.

Top-seeded Mauresmo lost in her first grass-court match of the season, falling to qualifier Vera Douchevina, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round at Eastbourne, England.
