Stuck Ship Is Freed, Towed to Long Beach
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A ship that went aground in Newport Beach was towed to Long Beach for an inspection Monday, two days after it ran ashore for the second time in about a month.
The Eland, a ship helping dredge the Santa Ana River, was freed at 10:05 p.m. Saturday after being stuck on a shoal since late Friday, said Tony Migliorini of the U.S. Coast Guard. The latest incident may have been caused by a cable wrapped around a propeller, he said. On Feb. 7, the Eland ran aground while towing pipes to a dumpsite.
