Yosemite’s newest flap

Lower Yosemite Falls has a renovated trail, parking lot, restrooms and amphitheater, but critics say the $13.5-million renovation has too many buildings that clash with the scenery.

“A lot of people say this project was overtaken by contributors more in love with creating their legacy than building something beautiful,” says Bart Brown, a former trustee of the Yosemite Fund, which provided 80% of the funds. But others say sturdy structures will better withstand periodic flooding.

Yosemite trail -- An article in last week’s Outdoors section stated the newly renovated trail at lower Yosemite Falls in Yosemite National Park opens April 18. The trail is now open and a dedication ceremony is scheduled for that date.

The trail opens to the public April 18, in time for runoff that should juice Yosemite park’s waterfalls. Yosemite Falls attracts up to 3 million viewers a year.
