An elderly couple remained in critical condition Tuesday after their car was struck by a sheriff’s cruiser in West Hills as it sped to an emergency with its siren on, authorities said.

A sheriff’s deputy suffered minor bumps and bruises in the collision, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Jason Lee.

The accident occurred at 3:06 p.m. at Valley Circle and Victory boulevards in West Hills. The couple’s car was struck broadside by the cruiser. The elderly driver then lost control of the car, and it struck another auto and an empty Metrolink bus, Lee said.

The sheriff’s cruiser was one of three Malibu station vehicles responding to an emergency. It was not immediately known what that call was about, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
