From Times Staff Reports

The state won a victory Monday in the struggle with insurance companies to help fund the cleanup of the Stringfellow hazardous waste site in Glen Avon. A Riverside County Superior Court jury found five insurers -- out of 35 that the state purchased policies from -- liable for $16 million to $28 million.

The state reached a $93-million settlement with 16 additional insurers in February. After two decades of litigation, the state has so far won $121 million for the cleanup effort.

About 35 million gallons of hazardous liquid industrial wastes were stored in ponds at the Stringfellow site from 1956 to 1972 and have contaminated local groundwater. Cleanup costs are estimated at more than $300 million.
