Tonight, There Can Be Only One King Of L.A.

Share

There is little doubt which horse will be the shortest price on the card tonight at Hollywood Park.

King Of L.A., who blitzed maidens by seven lengths in his first start in Inglewood on April 24, will be favored in the seventh race, a $49,000 allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs for older California breds.

Owned by Steve Taub and trained by Kristin Mulhall, King Of L.A., a 3-year-old son of Raji, was a troubled sixth at 3-1 odds in his Santa Anita debut on March 19.

In his return on the Gold Rush Day card, King Of L.A. broke well -- something he had not done in his debut -- and ran away from 11 rivals to win in 1:15 1/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs. Martin Pedroza has been aboard for both of his starts and he has the call again tonight.

K.C. Nite Mayr, second in his last two starts for owner Al Saroni Jr. and trainer Jay Robbins, is the horse King Of L.A. will have to beat. K.C. Nite Mayr was the runner-up to wire-to-wire winner Trail Mix in a $70,000 contest on the Gold Rush program.

Race of the day: Hot Attraction, who won by 7 1/4 lengths in her first start in Kentucky for trainer Wally Dollase, will seek a repeat in the ninth at Churchill Downs. Robby Albarado will ride the 3-year-old Pulpit filly in the $52,000 allowance at seven furlongs. She won once in five starts in California before shipping east.

One for the road: Dixie Thrill was re-claimed by trainer John Martin and can win for the third time in seven starts in the eighth at Golden Gate Fields. Frank Alvarado, who was aboard for the gelding’s three-length victory March 11 at Bay Meadows, has the call in the $16,000 claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A place pick all using Targetofopportunity and Hurricane Blaine in the first, Blushing Ciel and Gospodin in the second, Newport Green in the third, Norton Peak and The Known Q in the fourth, One Two Punch and Mercedes Dancer in the fifth, Smokey White Eyes in the sixth, King Of L.A. in the seventh and Flying Bearcat and Mighty Big Show in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/51. Money: Previous day/meet total: $10.80/$274. Total money bet: $346.
