4.2 Quake Strikes in Remote Area
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake centered 45 miles southeast of Palm Springs shook parts of Riverside, San Diego and Imperial counties Friday afternoon.
The epicenter was seven miles from Ocotillo Wells -- a remote area that is home to an off-road recreation park -- at 5:39 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department had not received reports of quake-related damage or injury by Friday evening, Lt. Tim Curran said.
“It’s a very rural area,” he said.
“It’s not unusual to have an earthquake of this size in that area,” said Bob Dollar, a USGS geophysicist based at Caltech’s seismology lab.
The quake, close to the Salton Sea, was along the San Jacinto fault, which historically has had a lot of seismic activity, Dollar said.
