(LA)[ PUMA CONCOLOR ]

When deer populations move out of the mountains of California each fall, they are invariably shadowed by their primary predator, the mountain lion. Also known as the puma or cougar, the mountain lion is one of the West’s most feared and misunderstood animals. Despite the hype, this large, beautiful cat spends most of its time hunting deer and avoids humans when possible. Though rarely sighted, the mountain lion is most likely found where deer are abundant, especially in the foothills and canyons after deer take up residence in October. Some of these lions may include youngsters wandering in search of new territories, and whose natural curiosity impels them to peek at humans from close quarters.

NATURAL HISTORY

An adult male fiercely protects a territory that can span an astonishing 100 square miles. This sometimes forces young males into marginal habitat in close proximity to human development, because they have nowhere else to go.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

An adult can reach 100 to 200 pounds. Because of its tan color, it is often mistaken for a golden retriever with a long skinny tail.
