Filly Tries to Smoke Field

Smokegetenyoureyes has something no one else scheduled to run in the seventh race today at Santa Anita possesses.

A win over the local turf course.

The 4-year-old Smokester filly won over the layout on April 15 and will take a significant class drop as she tries for her sixth lifetime victory for owner Peter Prousalis and trainer Jack Van Berg.

Last in the Yellow Ribbon, a Grade I, on Oct. 1, the California-bred will be facing eight opponents in the $45,000 allowance at one mile.

The lukewarm 7-2 choice in the race is The Wages Of Sin. Very unlucky when she was a troubled second in her turf debut on Aug. 17 at Del Mar, the 3-year-old High Yield filly will be ridden by Garrett Gomez. Owned by Lionheart Thoroughbreds and Tepper Racing and trained by Vladimir Cerin, she is seeking her second win in four starts.

Besides that pair, the race includes two horses coming off victories. Dance Of The Year beat $20,000 claimers sprinting on the dirt at Fairplex last month, and Champagne Dreams broke her maiden in her sixth career start for trainer Bobby Frankel on Aug. 28 at Del Mar. Jon Court will ride Dance Of The Year and Pat Valenzuela is scheduled to be aboard Champagne Dreams.

Race of the day: Comalagold will bid for her third win in a row as she tries tougher for owner Bobby Pruitt and trainer Larry Robideaux in the $100,000 Buffalo Trace Franklin County at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass at Keeneland. Mark Guidry will ride the 5-year-old Royal Empire mare who has won three of nine on the turf. Other contenders include Mocha Queen, Bright Gold, Tara’s Touch, Singit and Our Love.

One for the road: Rock Lobster finished well enough to be third in his debut at Saratoga and comes from a barn (Michael Dickinson) that does very well with second-time starters, so tab in today’s sixth at Belmont Park. Eibar Coa will ride the 2-year-old Mt. Livermore colt for Flatbird Stable in the $43,000 maiden affair at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Aries Rising, Charade Event and Whistling Straits in the sixth, The Wages Of Sin, Great Opinions and Vikki’s Honor in the seventh and Velziegellaub in the eighth.
