FBI Closes Probe Into Bay Bridge Welding
The FBI has closed an investigation into allegations that the new Bay Bridge had faulty welding, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant charges.
The inquiry was complicated, because in some instances the welds have been buried in concrete, investigators said. Without the physical evidence, they would have to rely on conflicting accounts from witnesses and experts, said agent Joe Ford.
Project contractor KFM Joint Venture, Caltrans and Cal-OSHA maintained that the welds and the workplace were safe. Other agencies, including the office of state Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, will continue looking into the workmanship.
