A small plane with two people aboard crashed in the ocean a mile west of Santa Catalina Island on Wednesday, officials said.

One body was recovered and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were seeking the second. Their identities were not released and the plane’s wreckage was not immediately found.

The Cessna 172 was heading from Redlands to the island when it crashed shortly before 12:30 p.m. The cause of the crash was not known, but the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
