The test of a test
Re “Appeals Court Upholds Exit Exam,” Aug. 12
What if the high school senior exit exam had a 100% passing rate? Then we would conclude that either the exam was much too easy or that all seniors are equally educated. Yet some decry the passing rate of 80% to 90%. All law school graduates get a degree. However, about a third fail the bar exam. Does that imply a poor education? Cultural bias? Too high standards? Even the easiest of exams to pass, the driving test, has a few who fail over and over. That’s the nature of almost all exams.
