State orders more time for Boeing runoff efforts

The state water board ordered the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board this week to give Boeing Co. more time to comply with stricter water quality standards in its wastewater discharge practices at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.

In a draft order approved Wednesday in Sacramento, the state board said the Topanga fire that swept through the Simi Hills in 2005, destroying much of the vegetation at the 2,850-acre hilltop lab, compromised Boeing’s ability to clean up its storm water runoff.

Natural vegetation is used to filter toxic substances from runoff that flows from the lab when it rains.

Boeing challenged the discharge permit approved by the regional board in January, saying it needed more time to comply with the rules.
