O.C. Officials Say They’ll Need Another Day to Contain the Fire
Fire officials Friday extended by 24 hours -- until 6 p.m. Sunday -- the time by which they expect to have a stubborn brush fire in northeastern Orange County fully contained.
“It’s just taking longer than we expected,” Capt. Stephen Miller, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority, said regarding the Sierra fire that’s been burning the canyons since Monday.
By late Friday, Miller said, the fire had burned 10,584 acres and was 84% contained.
Firefighters, he said, were taking advantage of the relative coolness and wetness of evening to tamp down remaining hot spots, which were spotted by air using infrared cameras. Forecasters expect stronger winds and higher temperatures early today, he said, with hazardous conditions through Monday.
“Our goal is to keep moving forward,” he said. “We are continuing to work on getting a line around the fire for full containment.”
