This Looks to Be a Spot for a Drysdale Winner

Share

Trainer Neil Drysdale has been effective with comebackers of late.

The Hall of Fame trainer has won with six of the last 28 runners he has sent out after a layoff of six months or more, and he will try to improve upon that 22% winning clip when he sends out One Off in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. Idle since finishing fourth in the Sunset Breeders’ Cup Handicap last July 17 at Hollywood Park, One Off, a 6-year-old Barathea gelding, will be trying for his first win in the U.S. for owners Burt and Jane Bacharach.

A winner of seven of 15 in Europe, One Off will be ridden by Garrett Gomez in the $68,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

The field also includes Clipperdown, Wild Buddy, Sort It Out, who will be making his first start on the grass, Uncle Denny, Fast And Furious, who has been more hype than performance so far in this country, Sam Forli, who is owned in part by Phoenix Coyote Coach Wayne Gretzky, and Warrior Song.

Race of the day: Indigo Cat, who won two of three starts in England, will make his U.S. debut for trainer Steve Asmussen in the eighth race at Gulfstream Park. Owned by Vinery Stables LLC, the 4-year-old Storm Cat colt will be treated with Lasix for the first time as he faces 11 in the $35,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles on turf. He will be ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan.

One for the road: My Husband is put in a spot where he can’t be claimed after a three-length victory over $25,000 claimers on Jan. 5. He can win right back in the eighth at Aqueduct, a $46,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles. Apprentice jockey Pablo Morales will ride the 5-year-old gelded son of Husband for Steel Your Face Stables and trainer Rick Dutrow Jr.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Just Em, Oneinspiredtopper and Camelita in the fifth, Exquisite Beauty, Unchanged Melody and Quarterly Report in the sixth, One Off in the seventh and Charismatic Gold, Little Sierra and Gorgeous Trieste in the eighth.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 3/106. Money: (previous day/meet total): $16.80/$665.20. Total money bet: $632.
