A robbery suspect was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies late Thursday in Compton after he brandished a weapon, authorities said.

A second suspect suffered a minor gunshot wound, said Sgt. Don Manumaleuna. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of an unregistered firearm.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call about 9:40 p.m. Thursday saying that two males, possibly with guns, were at a liquor store at Compton Boulevard and South Central Avenue, Manumaleuna said.

Deputies found the suspects a few minutes later.

As the deputies got out of their vehicles, one suspect turned and pointed a sawed-off shotgun at them, Manumaleuna said. When they saw the weapon, two deputies fired, officials said, striking the armed man and his companion.

Neither suspect fired any shots, Manumaleuna said.

No deputies or civilians were hurt during the shooting. Officials have not released names of the suspects or deputies involved.
