Contempt of Court Lands Bonds’ Trainer in Prison

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Barry Bonds’ personal trainer was held in contempt of court Wednesday in San Francisco and taken to prison for refusing to testify before the federal grand jury investigating the San Francisco Giants slugger for perjury.

Greg Anderson was led out of U.S. District Judge William Alsup’s courtroom by two deputy U.S. marshals. He will be housed at the Federal Correctional Institution in nearby Dublin, Calif., but his stay might be short.

That’s because Anderson will be set free once the grand jury’s term expires, which will occur within weeks, Alsup said.

Anderson was initially ordered in March to testify whether Bonds perjured himself in testifying before the original BALCO grand jury in December 2003 that he had never knowingly used steroids or other banned performance-enhancing drugs.

“Every person, even the president of the United States as held by the Supreme Court, has to give testimony,” Alsup said in ordering Anderson to prison.

Alsup denied Anderson’s request for bail or to remain free while his attorney, Mark Geragos, appeals the decision.

“You have done a masterful job of postponing this day of reckoning,” the judge told Geragos.

The Giants said Bonds would have no comment on the development. Bonds’ attorney, Michael Rains, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Wild Signs Gaborik to Three-Year Deal

The Minnesota Wild signed right wing Marian Gaborik to a three-year, $19-million contract, hours before he was expected to file for salary arbitration.

Wednesday was the deadline for restricted free agents to file for arbitration.

The deal means the Wild avoided having to go to a hearing at which a third party would have determined a one-year salary for Gaborik.

The Calgary Flames signed forward Alex Tanguay to a three-year, $15.75-million deal.

The Flames also signed unrestricted free-agent winger Jeff Friesen to a $1.6-million, one-year deal. Friesen had four goals and seven assists with Washington and the Ducks last season.

Seven Area High Schools on NCAA Standards List

The NCAA released a list of 16 additional high schools that have not met its standards for initial athletic eligibility.

Of these, seven are listed as being in Santa Ana. However, one of the listed schools, “Access,” is the Alternative, Community and Correctional Education Schools and Services, a program operated by the Orange County Department of Education, in Santa Ana.

The six other schools are alternative or correctional education facilities under the Access program, and only two offer interscholastic sports. Rio Contiguo School and Youth Guidance Center in Santa Ana and Los Pinos Conservation Camp in Lake Elsinore are Southern Section members and field baseball and boys’ basketball teams.

Rick Martin, director of educational services for Access, said he was unaware that any of his schools were on the list.

“All of our schools have temporary enrollments,” he said.

The NCAA said the disqualified schools did not adequately respond to requests for information or submitted information that verified they did not meet NCAA standards.
