Chistov Returns to Ducks

Winger Stanislav Chistov, who played in his native Russia in 2005-06, returned to the Ducks on Monday, signing a two-year contract that will pay him $800,000 each season.

Chistov, 23, had 11 goals and 21 assists in 47 games with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Russian Super League after playing with Cincinnati of the American Hockey League during the NHL lockout.

A gifted offensive player who struggled with the Ducks in 2003-04, Chistov could help offset the loss of forward Joffrey Lupul, whom the Ducks traded to Edmonton for defenseman Chris Pronger.

“I think I’m more of a complete player than I was before,” said Chistov, who played in Russia under former NHL coach Dave King.

After being selected by the Ducks as the fifth pick in the 2001 draft, Chistov had a promising rookie season in 2002-03 with 30 points in 79 games and another six points in the postseason as the Ducks advanced to the Stanley Cup finals.

In 2003-04, Chistov had only two goals and 16 assists in 58 games. On Monday, he said the NHL’s crackdown on obstruction will help his game.

Chistov figures to have a strong chance to make the team with two other forward spots up for grabs because Jeff Friesen signed with Calgary and Jonathan Hedstrom was expected to remain in Sweden.
