Minnesota 3, at Cleveland 1: Rookie Francisco Liriano (12-2) struck out 10 in five innings and the Twins tied a May 6, 1966, team record with 17 strikeouts. Liriano gave up one run and four hits and walked three. It was his third double-digit strikeout game this season as Minnesota rebounded from its first loss in nine games. The Twins improved to 9-3 after the All-Star break and 31-8 since June 8.

at Toronto 13, New York 5: Vernon Wells hit two of the Blue Jays’ five home runs and Toronto scored eight times in the third inning to hand the Yankees their fourth loss in five games. Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske and Reed Johnson homered in the third. Sidney Ponson (0-1) struggled in his second start for New York, giving up six runs, five hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings. Alex Rodriguez went 0 for 4 and is in a four-for-27 slump.

at Detroit 8, Oakland 4: Carlos Guillen tripled, doubled and singled, and Nate Robertson improved to 9-6 for the Tigers. Guillen also drove in two runs. After getting three hits in the first four innings, he missed a chance at the cycle when he walked in the sixth. Magglio Ordonez added a two-run single and scored twice.

at Chicago 5, Texas 0: Jon Garland (10-3) pitched 8 1/3 shutout innings and the White Sox ended a four-game losing streak and avoided a sweep. The ill will between Chicago and Vicente Padilla resurfaced after Texas’ starter hit Alex Cintron in the third inning. Garland responded by throwing the first two pitches of the fourth behind Ian Kinsler.

Baltimore 4, at Tampa Bay 2: Erik Bedard (12-6) pitched seven strong innings to win his seventh consecutive start and Melvin Mora hit a tiebreaking RBI single during a two-run eighth inning. Bedard gave up two runs and three hits.
