Record Seeks Turn for the Better
If it was not clear before, it should be now, given how Record ran in the Affirmed Handicap on June 17 at Hollywood Park.
The 3-year-old son of Devil His Due is best around one turn.
In his latest venture around two turns, Record finished last in the Affirmed, a Grade III stakes race at 1 1/16 miles. He is now winless in three starts around two turns.
In one-turn contests, however, the $130,000 yearling purchase has won two of three, including a neck victory in the Derby Trial on April 29 at Churchill Downs.
Record will get to play his preferred game this afternoon when he takes on eight others in the seventh race, a $64,000 optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs, at Del Mar.
Owned by Sunset Stables and trained by Bob Baffert, Record broke his maiden at today’s distance on Feb. 4 at Del Mar and won the one-mile Derby Trial in his last race around one turn.
Race of the day: Scat Daddy, who beat maidens by 5 1/4 lengths in his debut over a muddy track on June 3 at Belmont Park, heads a small field of five 2-year-olds today in the $150,000 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga. John Velazquez will ride the Johannesburg colt for owner James Scatuorchio and trainer Todd Pletcher in the Grade II race at six furlongs. Bagger Vance, Teuflesberg, War Wolf and Trip To The Bank will provide the opposition for Scat Daddy.
One for the road: Daint won on the turf in his debut at Indiana Downs last month and can come right back in the seventh race today at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky. Bill Troilo will ride the 3-year-old Burt’s Bubbleator gelding for owner Fred McCrary and trainer Joe Davis in the $22,000 allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs on grass.
Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the third keying Sunny Disposition on top with Peaceful Love, Sohgol and Galloping Angel in the two hole and all in the third spot.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 4/20. Money: (previous day/meet total): $27.60/$105.60. Total money bet: $120.
