Squallacious Stretches Out

Share

When Hollywood Park began its spring-summer meet April 26, Squallacious was an unraced maiden.

Less than two months later, the 3-year-old Summer Squall filly is unbeaten in two starts and poised to become a graded stakes winner for owner Richard Trontz and trainer Mike Puype.

After a pair of sprint victories, Squallacious will stretch out to 1 1/16 miles today in the Grade II $150,000 Hollywood Breeders’ Cup Oaks in Inglewood.

Squallacious is coming back 11 days after scoring as the 7-10 favorite in her first against winners. She toyed with her four overmatched rivals, winning by 3 1/2 lengths while never asked for her best by jockey Corey Nakatani, who has the mount in the Oaks.

Her opponents include Hystericalady, who has won three of five for part owner and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Bettarun Fast, who has won two Grade III sprints in a row for trainer Vladimir Cerin, Downthedustyroad, She’s An Eleven, Chosen Royalty and Mystery Girl.

A California-bred daughter of In Excess, She’s An Eleven will be trying to rebound from a poor performance in Maryland. She finished fifth as the 11-10 favorite in the Black Eyed Susan on May 19 at Pimlico. Tyler Baze will ride the Melair Stakes winner for C R K Stable and trainer John Sadler.

Race of the day: Dubai Escapade, who is unbeaten in three U.S. starts for Darley Stable and trainer Eoin Harty, will face five other female sprinters in the $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park. Edgar Prado will ride Dubai Escapade in the Grade II at 6 1/2 furlongs. Her main rival is Smokey Glacken, who has won three in a row.

One for the road: Osiris Lunus has trained well for his debut and comes from a barn (Dean Pederson) that wins often with first-time starters, so tab him in the sixth race at Bay Meadows. Chance Rollins will ride the 3-year-old Bertrando gelding for Dolphin Racing Stable Inc., in the six-furlong contest.

Exotically speaking: Late doubles using Squallacious in the eighth with Miaduebelle and Future Thought in the ninth.
