Chadlington Tries the Cinema

Chadlington has demonstrated he can handle the grass and lesser company in Northern California.

Now, the 3-year-old Robellino colt has to show he can run with the bigger boys in this part of the state.

Unbeaten in two starts on the Golden Gate Fields turf, Chadlington will try for his first local win when he faces seven today in the $150,000 Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $157,627.

Owned by a partnership and trained by Paddy Gallagher, who is having a solid meet in Inglewood, Chadlington, who began his career in his native Ireland, failed to win in three races at Santa Anita. Alex Solis will ride him for the first time in the Cinema, a Grade III stakes race at 1 1/8 miles.

The field is completed by The Five J’s, Niagara Causeway, Film Fortune, Genre, Obrigado, New Joysey Jeff and Global Genius.

After today, Hollywood Park will be dark until racing resumes Thursday and continues through July 4. On Wednesday, Hollywood Park will be open for simulcast wagering.

Race of the day: Malakoff, who won the Marine in his stakes debut May 20, will try for his third consecutive win at Toronto’s Woodbine in the $1-million Queen’s Plate. Todd Kabel will be aboard the 3-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid in the Grade I race that is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Malakoff is owned by Frank Stronach and is trained by Brian Lynch. Wanna Runner, who will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, is the 9-5 morning line favorite in the 1 1/4 -mile race.

One for the road: Actual goes from route to sprint and is unbeaten at five furlongs, the distance of today’s race, and will try to win for the fourth time in nine starts in the fifth race at Churchill Downs.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Well Mam and Go Bye Bye in the first, Early Cotton in the second, Plagiarist and Tontine Too in the third and Girvan, Senior Discount and Echezeaux in the fourth.
