Dick Bennett will retire as men’s basketball coach at Washington State after the season and turn over the team to his son Tony.

“I did what I set out to do. What I wanted to do might have been a little more,” Bennett said in a Pacific 10 Conference coaches’ conference call. “The best way I could put it is: We got what we expected, not necessarily what we hoped for.”

Bennett, 62, hired in March 2003 to rebuild the Cougars, had said recently he probably would retire after this season. With two games remaining, the Cougars are 11-14 overall, 4-12 in Pac-10 play. Bennett has a 36-46 record with the team.

Terms of Tony Bennett’s contract are still being discussed, Athletic Director Jim Sterk said.

Kyle Macy resigned as coach at Morehead State, which finished 4-23 this season, one of the worst records in the nation.

Macy, a former Kentucky star who spent seven seasons in the NBA, had a 106-144 record in nine seasons as coach.

Morehead State failed to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the second consecutive season.

Macy had some parting words for administrators at the Kentucky school.

“I leave with great pride in what I have been able to accomplish at a school that only verbally supports their sports programs. Those in charge have unrealistic expectations of success considering the lack of funds budgeted,” Macy said in a statement.

Sumpter, a second-team All-Big East Conference selection last season, hadn’t played this season after tearing a ligament in his left knee twice in eight months.
