Santa Margarita didn’t care how its victory was wrapped Tuesday night. After losing by 30 points to Lakewood Artesia in the Southern Section Division III-AA boys’ basketball final Saturday, the sixth-seeded Eagles were simply hoping to keep their postseason alive.

Locked in another fast-paced game with host San Diego Crawford in a Southern California Regional Division III-AA quarterfinal, Santa Margarita scored a 51-46 victory and a rematch at top-seeded Artesia in a semifinal Thursday.

Artesia beat Central Section champion Tulare Union, 86-59.

“It wasn’t the prettiest victory, but we’ll take it,” said Santa Margarita senior forward Christian Hernandez, who scored eight of his 16 points in the third quarter.

“I was lucky to make some shots and come up big,” said Mychal Thompson, who scored nine of the Eagles’ 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Thompson missed all five of his shots in the third quarter and was one for 10 heading into the fourth, but his early three-point play gave the Eagles (27-4) a four-point lead.

He made two free throws with 13.5 seconds left for a three-point lead.

Tyler Tucker had an opportunity to tie the score for the Colts (23-9), the San Diego Section Division III champions, but he missed his baseline three-point attempt with four seconds left.

Tyrone Shelley, who had averaged 27 points for Crawford, scored 16 of his 28 points in the first half to help the fourth-seeded Colts take a 25-24 lead.

Spring Valley Mount Miguel 48, Brea Olinda 47 -- Jeanette Pohlen had 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but fourth-seeded Brea Olinda was hurt by poor third-quarter shooting and never quite recovered in a Southern California Regional Division II girls’ basketball quarterfinal at Brea Olinda.

While the Southern Section Division II-A champion Ladycats (20-12) made only two of 13 shots in the third quarter, San Diego Section Division II runner-up Mount Miguel (24-7) broke a 20-20 halftime tie and built a 37-28 advantage -- the biggest of the game for either team -- going into the fourth quarter.

Harbor City Narbonne 46, Chula Vista Eastlake 41 -- Sophomore Reiko Thomas missed her first nine shots but made good on her 10th, a three-pointer from the corner with 17 seconds left, to help Narbonne (24-6) survive a Southern California Regional Division I quarterfinal at home and set up a Thursday meeting with Long Beach Poly, a 50-35 winner over West Bakersfield.

“I wasn’t that open, and usually I don’t take shots like that,” said Thomas, who added a layup at the buzzer after a three-point miss by Eastlake’s Brittany Palmer.

San Diego Section runner-up Eastlake (24-8) trailed, 39-30, but went on an 11-2 run behind Brittany Daniel’s seven points to tie the score at 41 with 1:39 left.

Morghan Medlock led Narbonne, the City Section champion, with 16 points and 20 rebounds and was the only Gaucho to score more than six. Narbonne made only 19 of 58 shots.

“I told the kids, we’re just happy to move on,” Narbonne Coach James Anderson said.
