Rob Evans won’t return for a ninth season as Arizona State’s coach.

The school made the announcement Friday, a few hours after Evans, 59, had an hour-long meeting with Athletic Director Lisa Love.

Love didn’t say whether Evans had been fired or quit. She said the university would pay Evans for the final year of his contract.

Evans had a record of 119-120.

The decision by the NCAA does not affect this season’s team.

The banner hanging in the Value City Arena will be altered to erase any mention of the team’s trip to the 1999 semifinals, and record books will be changed to delete pictures and statistics for the four tournament teams that included ineligible player Boban Savovic. The university must also repay about $800,000 in tournament revenues from 1999 to 2002.
