They Try to Get Up to Speed

Four of the six 3-year-old fillies entered in the seventh race at Santa Anita today are coming off victories.
The only two California-breds who didn’t win their last start are Marciamarciamarcia and Quarterly Report.
A daughter of Cee’s Tizzy, Marciamarciamarcia will be making her first start for trainer Doug O’Neill after being claimed for $20,000 on March 10. She was third that day, beaten by 13 lengths, so she will have to improve significantly to pose a threat in the $58,000 optional claimer at one mile.
Quarterly Report is a contender, however, if she runs back to her last dirt race for Fog City Stable and trainer Bob Baffert. The General Meeting filly won by 2 1/2 lengths in her first try at today’s distance on Jan. 22, before failing to fire against open company in her grass debut in the China Doll on March 11.
Race of the day: Balletto will make her first start since finishing second to Sweet Catomine in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 30, 2004 in the eighth race today at Gulfstream Park. Edgar Prado will ride the 4-year-old in the $37,000 optional claimer at one mile.
One for the road: His Eyes gets a confident bump in class after being claimed by trainer Bret Calhoun for $20,000 on March 1 and can win from the rail in the eighth race today at Oaklawn Park. Corey Lanerie will ride the 3-year-old Gold Case gelding in the $50,000 claimer at one mile.
Exotically speaking: A pick four using Bluesthestandard in the fifth, Bransfield, Corey County and Identique in the sixth, Quarterly Report and Purrfectly Fitting in the seventh and Joanna’s Jacuzzi and Burst Of Light in the eighth.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 4/195. Money: (previous day/meet total): $18.20/$1,139. Total money bet: $1,154.
