Star Parade and Hollywood Story, a pair of Hollywood Park specialists, will try to rebound from disappointing efforts on the road in the $100,000 Hawthorne Handicap today in Inglewood.

A combined six for 12 on the Hollywood Park main track, Star Parade and Hollywood Story ran horribly in the Apple Blossom Handicap on April 8 at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. The 19-10 second choice, Star Parade finished fifth, beating only Hollywood Story, who wound up 16 lengths behind surprise winner Spun Sugar.

Owned by Gary Tanaka and trained by Darrell Vienna, Star Parade, a 7-year-old Parade Marshal mare, won the last time she raced at Hollywood Park. She won the Bayakoa Handicap by four lengths Dec. 11.

Trained by John Shirreffs for owner George Krikorian, Hollywood Story has won three of six here and is the defending champion in the Hawthorne, a Grade III at 1 1/16 miles. She overcame a troubled first turn to win by 2 1/2 lengths as the 9-10 favorite.

The one to beat in the Hawthorne is Healthy Addiction, who is coming off a wire-to-wire upset in the Santa Margarita Handicap on March 11 at Santa Anita.

New Regina, who has never raced on dirt, Freakin Streakin and Santa Candida complete the field. The Hawthorne is the third race on the card, so it is not part of a pick six with a carry-over of $152,898.

Race of the day: Ice Cool Kitty will bid for her third consecutive win as she makes her stakes debut in the $100,000 Bouwerie at Belmont Park. The seven-furlong race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $144,515.

One for the road: Melissa’s Prayer won in her return to turf for trainer Bill White and can win right back in the eighth at Calder. Manoel Cruz will be aboard the 3-year-old Songandaprayer filly for owners Vicki and William Poston in the $26,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Entry Point and Good Gold in the first; Appealing Sweets in the second; Star Parade, Healthy Addiction, Hollywood Story and New Regina in the third; and Strictly Legit and Newyearresolution in the fourth.
