Calf Injury Puts Padres’ Williams on Disabled List
The San Diego Padres put right-handed pitcher Woody Williams on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left calf and purchased right-hander Jim Brower’s contract from Class-A Eugene on Saturday.
The Padres also optioned outfielder Ben Johnson to triple-A Portland and called up pitcher Cla Meredith.
Williams is 3-1 with a 3.27 earned-run average.
The Padres signed Brower to a minor-league contract after he was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles.

The Oakland Athletics put All-Star reliever Justin Duchscherer on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Chad Gaudin from triple-A Sacramento. Duchscherer hasn’t pitched since May 6 against Tampa Bay because of tightness and soreness in his right elbow.... The New York Yankees put struggling reliever Tanyon Sturtze on the 15-day disabled list because of soreness in the front of his pitching shoulder.... Florida Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre went on the 15-day disabled list because of right shoulder inflammation.... The Philadelphia Phillies put pitcher Julio Santana on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his right elbow.... Washington put catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring.

Kerry Wood, coming back from arthroscopic shoulder surgery, probably will make his first start of the season Thursday when the Chicago Cubs play the Washington Nationals.

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired pitcher Brian Shouse from the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder Enrique Cruz and a player to be determined, the Brewers said.
