San Antonio Drops Offer

San Antonio’s offer to pledge $200 million toward the cost of building a new stadium for the Florida Marlins was dropped after Major League Baseball decided it could not meet the city’s May 15 deadline for a firm deal to move the struggling franchise there.

Bob DuPuy, baseball’s chief operating officer, wrote Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff -- the point man in the plan to woo the Marlins from Miami to Texas -- and noted, “We are working closely with the Marlins to secure a stadium in Florida.”

The Minnesota Twins made a move with their struggling rotation, sending shaky Carlos Silva to the bullpen and promoting left-hander Francisco Liriano.... The Baltimore Orioles put right-hander Daniel Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list because of a muscle strain in his right shoulder. The Orioles recalled reliever Chris Britton from double-A Bowie, Md., to replace Cabrera on the roster.... New York Mets right-hander Victor Zambrano had surgery to replace a torn ligament in his pitching elbow, an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season.... Third baseman Chad Tracy and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a $13.25-million, three-year contract extension through 2009 that includes a team option for the following season.... The Florida Marlins optioned left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas to triple-A Albuquerque and recalled left-hander Renyel Pinto from the minor league team.... The Kansas City Royals put right-hander Chris Booker on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Joe Nelson from triple-A Omaha.
