McCann Delivers for Braves

From the Associated Press

Brian McCann never expected to find his name atop the National League’s batting averages.

But there he is, hitting .352, after one of the biggest games of his career Monday night.

McCann hit a three-run homer, finished with a career-best five runs batted in and helped the Braves overcome a 5-0 deficit to pull out a wild 11-8 victory over the Florida Marlins at Atlanta.

Andruw Jones had four hits and four RBIs for the Braves, but he has done that sort of thing before. The 22-year-old McCann is a huge surprise, even though he showed enough potential during his rookie season for the Braves to trade former All-Star catcher Johnny Estrada.

“Nobody expects to be hitting .350,” said McCann, who went three for five.

“I’m just trying to put some consistent at-bats together.”

The only setback for the Braves: Starting pitcher Kyle Davies left because of a groin injury and probably is headed to the disabled list.

Arizona 6, San Diego 5 -- Shawn Green singled in the winning run in the 10th inning at Phoenix.

Green’s hit came two innings after Tony Clark ended an 0-for-26 slump with a tying homer.

Eric Byrnes led off the 10th with a double down the left-field line off Scott Cassidy (3-1). Left-hander Alan Embree relieved and retired Chad Tracy on a line drive to first.

That brought up Luis Gonzalez, who bounced to short, with Byrnes holding at second. The Padres intentionally walked Clark, a switch-hitter, to get to the left-handed Green, who singled past second baseman Josh Barfield to score Byrnes.

Arizona handed the NL West leaders their second defeat in 16 games and ended the Padres’ franchise-record eight-game road win streak.
