Vachetta Wins Kindergarten
Trainer Jaime Gomez finished 1-2 in the $325,900 Kindergarten Futurity for the second year in a row Saturday night when Vachetta, the 5-2 second choice, defeated Check This Runner and seven others at Los Alamitos.
Owned by Beltran Ranch LLC and ridden by Alejandro Luna, who was earning his first win in the Grade I, Vachetta, a 2-year-old Corona Cartel filly, is now unbeaten in three starts. She broke extremely fast and was never seriously menaced while completing the 300 yards in 15.26 seconds.
This was the fifth Kindergarten win since 1996 for Gomez, who had the first two finishers in 2005 with Gold Nugget Rd and Higher Fire.
Corona Deluxe finished third and Positively Powerful was fourth. The field was reduced to nine when Jess Sass Me, who is also trained by Gomez, was scratched because of injury.
