Silver Stars Win With New Crew
The San Antonio Silver Stars, who were 7-27 last season, surprised the Houston Comets, 79-63, Sunday in a WNBA opener for both teams at Toyota Center.
The Silver Stars’ top three scorers were all new to the team. San Antonio got 18 points from free-agent acquisition Vickie Johnson, who had played nine seasons for the New York Liberty; 15 points from rookie Shanna Zolman and 13 from rookie Sophia Young.
Zolman, the former Tennessee standout, made all three of her three-point shots for the Silver Stars, who shot 53.8% from beyond the arc. Young, the former Baylor standout, had a game-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive boards.
San Antonio outrebounded Houston, 40-20. The victory ended the Silver Stars’ nine-game losing streak, dating to a 68-63 win in Houston on July 30.
Sheryl Swoopes scored 19 points for the Comets, but Tina Thompson was limited to five points on two-for-12 shooting.
