Writing’s been deleted
Re “Winning by Writing Right,” May 23
The triumph of the computer has destroyed penmanship as we know it in our schools.
At one time, say in 1955, we had the three Rs: reading, “ ‘riting” and “ ‘rithmetic.” Today we have only two Rs: reading and “ ‘rithmetic.”
Today’s college graduate can only write with run-on sentences like an Irish novelist.
The computer has done a marvelous job in getting us to the moon and beyond, but it has destroyed writing, once considered a coveted ability. Andre Cataluna is a student to be much admired.
