Northridge rolls with 159 points

Jonathan Heard scored 22 points and Mike McCreary and Calvin Chitwood each had 19 points, and host Cal State Northridge defeated Redlands, 159-97, Wednesday night.

The Matadors (3-1) set a school and Big West Conference record for most points in a game. Northridge’s previous high was 123 points against U.S. International in January 1991. Nevada Las Vegas previously held the conference record with 142 points against Utah State in January 1985.

Daniel Markus led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 22 points.

Long Beach State 86, San Jose State 67 -- Sterling Byrd had 20 points and six rebounds to lead the 49ers in a consolation game of the CBE Classic.

The 49ers (1-1) used a 12-3 run to start the second half and pull away at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion a night after losing to Air Force, 69-68, in a first-round game.

Long Beach State shot 60.6% in the second half and held the Spartans to 33% shooting.

Arizona State 69, Cal State San Bernardino 52 -- Antwi Atuahene scored 11 points at Tempe, Ariz., to lead five Sun Devils (1-1) in double figures and give new Coach Herb Sendek his first victory.

Lance Ortiz had 11 points for the Coyotes (0-1).

UC Riverside 88, Vanguard 63 -- Larry Cunningham had a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Benoit Bekono had a career-high 18 points to lead the host Highlanders (2-2).

Dennis Heenan had 15 points for the Lions (1-3).
