Share

Horse Greeley, who became a stakes winner in his third career start in the Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 6, will stretch to 1 1/16 miles today in the $250,000 Norfolk Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

Owned by breeders Roy and Martha Parfet and trained by Richard Mandella, the 2-year-old Mr. Greeley colt will race eight opponents in the Grade II. Victor Espinoza will ride.

Since his win in the Futurity, Horse Greeley has worked well in Arcadia, including a 58 3/5 best-of-the-morning run five days ago.

Principle Secret, who beat Horse Greeley in a maiden race on July 22 at Del Mar in the debut for both colts, will also be trying two turns for the first time. A son of Sea Of Secrets owned by Charles Cono and trained by Chris Paasch, Principle Secret has been away since winning the Best Pal, a Grade II, by three lengths on Aug. 13. He will be ridden by Alex Solis.

Other contenders in the Norfolk are Malt Magic, a 9 1/2 -length winner in his first route on Sept. 4, Stormello and Spot The Diplomat, a California bred who has won three of four for owner-breeder John Harris and trainer Carla Gaines.

Race of the day: Happy Ticket, who has run at 10 tracks in a span of about 22 months, will make it 11 when she takes on eight other fillies and mares in the $500,000 Spinster at 1 1/8 miles at Keeneland. Garrett Gomez will ride the 5-year-old Anet mare for the first time. Owned by breeder Stewart Madison and trained by Andy Leggio, Jr., Happy Ticket will break from the rail and will be opposed by, among others, Spun Sugar, Sharp Lisa, Summerly and Lemons Forever, the upset winner of the Kentucky Oaks.

One for the road: Wild R.N. debuts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and can make the last run count in a speed-filled eighth race at Golden Gate Fields.

Jockey Russell Baze will be aboard the 3-year-old Wild Again filly for owner Mark Dedomenico in the $31,000 allowance at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Vaquelin in the first, Mandalay Trick, Lips Like Sugar and Antifreezette in the second and all in the third.
