Houston Takes It to Limit
at Houston 31, Rice 30: Kevin Kolb threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and the Cougars came from 16 points down to defeat the Owls in a Conference USA game at Houston. Kolb, who is second on the Houston career passing list behind David Klingler, completed 22 of 35 for 233 yards and three touchdowns, including seven of 13 for 88 yards in the fourth quarter. In Coach Todd Graham’s inaugural game with the Owls, Rice led 30-14 late in the third quarter after a 44-yard field goal by Luke Juist.
at Central Florida 35, Villanova 16: Steven Moffett threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Golden Knights at Orlando, Fla., for their first victory in a season opener in eight years.
at Ohio 29, Tennessee Martin 3: T.J. Wright scored on a 35-yard fumble recovery, and the Bobcats also got a safety to win at Athens, Ohio.
at Navy 28, East Carolina 23: Brian Hampton ran for 149 of the Midshipmen’s 403 rushing yards as they held off the Pirates at Annapolis, Md. Adam Ballard gained 97 yards in 13 carries, and Reggie Campbell had 62 yards in eight carries.
at Arkansas State 14, Army 6: Reggie Arnold ran for 140 yards and a touchdown at Jonesboro, Ark., as the Indians opened at home for only the second time since 1995. Army, in its 123rd season, was playing a road opener for only the seventh time.
at Troy 38, Alabama State 0: Omar Haugabook threw four touchdown passes in his debut, including three to Gary Banks, to lead the Trojans at Troy, Ala.
