Hinds Impressive for UNLV in Win

at Nevada Las Vegas 54, Idaho State 10: Ryan Wolfe set a school single-game freshman record with 160 receiving yards, and David Peoples had two touchdowns to lead the Rebels. Wolfe caught six passes, including a 71-yarder from USC transfer Rocky Hinds early in the fourth quarter, to lift the Rebels to their first season-opening victory since 2003. Peoples’ short scoring runs helped the Rebels register 27 unanswered points to close the first half. In his debut, Hinds completed 24 of 42 passes for 322 yards, adding 42 rushing yards in six carries.

Portland State 17, at New Mexico 6: Sawyer Smith threw two second-half touchdown passes and the Division I-AA Vikings took advantage of numerous mistakes to win at Albuquerque. New Mexico’s offense, under first-year offensive coordinator and former UCLA head coach Bob Toledo, sputtered all night. The Lobos had 339 total yards to Portland State’s 233, but could muster only a pair of first-half field goals from Kenny Byrd, from 29 and 24 yards.

at Wyoming 38, Utah State 7: Hoost Marsh scored two touchdowns in leading the Cowboys at Laramie, Wyo., and ending a six-game losing streak dating to last season. After three quarters, Wyoming led just 17-7. But three big plays in the fourth quarter put the Cowboys well out of reach as the Aggies had trouble rallying either their offense or defense.

at Colorado State 30, Weber State 6: Gartrell Johnson III scored three touchdowns and the Rams’ defense held the Wildcats to minus-38 yards rushing in a victory at Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State was without junior running back Kyle Bell, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last Tuesday in practice. Weber State quarterback Ian Pizarro was sacked seven times.

at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 44, Fort Lewis 0: The Mustangs held visiting Division II Fort Lewis to 79 total yards. Ernie Cooper rushed for touchdowns of 22 and three yards for Cal Poly in the first five minutes. Teammate James Noble rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown in nine carries. Matt Brennan and Fred Hives II also had touchdown runs.
