4 Oxnard Bakery Workers Shot During Robbery
An Oxnard man remained in critical but stable condition Monday after he and three fellow workers were shot during a robbery at a bakery, police said.
The gunman, wearing a bandanna, walked into the Panaderia Vanessa near downtown Oxnard shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. He emptied the cash register and then “herded” the workers toward the rear of the store, officials said.
When the workers began to run, the gunman opened fire, hitting three of them. A fourth worker was shot in the shoulder as he tried to get the gun away from the assailant, police said.
Arcy Martinez, daughter of the bakery owners, said three of the injured employees were treated and released. The fourth -- shot in the back -- remained at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
The hospital would not release information about the patient’s condition. But Martinez said that the bullet hit his spinal cord.
She said the hospitalized man is in his late 30s, married and the father of a teenage girl. He has worked at the bakery since it opened 17 years ago, Martinez said, adding that he is like a member of her family.
The bakery was open for business Labor Day, but Martinez said everyone was in a state of shock: “We’ve been open for 17 years and never had that happen.”
Oxnard Police Department spokesman David Keith said that the gunman is believed to be Latino, about 5-feet-8 and 180 pounds. He was last seen fleeing in a dark sedan, which was waiting for him outside the bakery.
