A 38-year-old correctional officer at the California Institution for Men in Chino was airlifted to a hospital Friday after he was assaulted while guarding about 200 prisoners in the minimum-security unit.
Prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove said the guard, who has worked for the corrections department for three years, underwent tests to detect possible internal injuries to his head and upper torso.
The officer also had a broken nose and a cut on his forehead.
Hargrove said the cause of the scuffle at the facility, the number of inmates involved and the weapon used were under investigation.
Two guards are assigned to the housing unit.
